What is Gold PVD Coated?
GOLD PLATED VS PVD COATED: WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?
What is Gold Plating?
Gold plating is a common technique in the jewellery world, used to deposit a thin layer of gold onto the surface of another metal, such as copper or silver.
It’s a very popular choice due to its luxurious look without the hefty price tag.
However, if you’re thinking it sounds too good to be true, you’re right.
There are two major downsides to gold plated jewellery.
Firstly, it’s not eco-friendly. The materials are not biodegradable and they are glued in place with toxic chemicals, making them a colossal cause of environmental pollution.
Secondly, gold plating does not last. If you wear gold plated jewellery in the ocean, pool or at the gym, its golden hue will dull & wear off over time. Not only is this disappointing for the person wearing it, but this quality standard is supporting fast fashion and ultimately causing more damage to the planet.
So, what’s the next best option? Fork out a few thousand dollars for pure gold?!
Nope!
Let us introduce you to the innovative process that’s shaking up the jewellery industry: PVD coating.
What is PVD Coating?
PVD stands for Physical Vapor Deposition. What that means is a coat of vaporized metal (gold) is applied onto another metal (stainless steel), creating a bond that is virtually indestructible.
PVD coating is far stronger than gold plating because it is a metal bonding at the molecular level. This means you can bang it around and it doesn't chip off easily - great for people who never take their jewellery off!
Its impressive durability even makes it more resistant to corrosion from sweat and chemicals, compared to gold plating. This means you can wear PVD coated jewellery in the ocean, pool, at the gym, over fake tan, body lotions, perfumes etc… and it will not tarnish.
It's a great choice for those who don’t want to drop a few thousand dollars on solid gold, but also want long lasting jewellery.
We’re not the only ones who love PVD coated jewellery, Mother Nature also gives it the tick of approval.
The entire PVD process is an environmentally friendly & safe process to the environment, employees and end users (aka, you).
Because the PVD coatings are applied in a sealed vacuum system, it eliminates the need for liquid solvents or hazardous chemicals (unlike gold plating).
Not only is this a saviour for sensitive skin, it also means there is zero chance of any pollution or toxic waste spilling out and damaging the environment.
So, if you’re now thinking: “Why don’t all jewellery brands use PVD coating?”
Good question!
PVD coating is new to the jewellery industry. In fact, it wasn't originally intended for jewellery.
It was developed by NASA scientists to create a lighter, stronger & more eco-friendly alternative to chrome plating for parts going into space.
And if it was good enough for NASA’s space parts, it’s good enough for Goldieboxx Jewellery!
Now, luxury brands like Cartier and Rolex have embraced PVD for its ability to withstand the test of time.
We hope to see more jewellery brands, big and small, jump on board and start using the PVD method.
Our entire collection is made from 18K gold PVD coated stainless steel. Give it a try for yourself and see how durable and vibrant this jewellery really is!
